About
In 2018, Mehul stood in a rental shop in New York, looking at a polyester-blend blazer that fit like a wet paper bag. He was headed to a wedding in Italy and realized he didn't know the difference between a peak lapel and a notch, or why some shirts cost $20 and others cost $200.
He spent the flight reading about Neapolitan tailoring. He spent the wedding staring at the locals' shoulder pleats. When he got back, he started a thread on a menswear subreddit: "Why does everything on the rack feel like plastic?"
The thread blew up. A dozen guys in the same boat started swapping tailor recommendations, fabric swatches, and tips on how to find vintage Harris Tweed without getting scammed on eBay.
The group called itself Styledean—a name that stuck after a few late nights debating the "Dean" of different aesthetics. It was never meant to be a business. It was just a group of guys who'd rather talk about the drape of a trouser than follow a fleeting TikTok trend.
The Bar Years
For four years, Styledean was a monthly meetup—starting in a quiet corner of a Brooklyn pub. It was casual: show up in whatever you're wearing, bring a garment you're proud of (or one you regret buying), and don't be a snob.
Mehul kept it simple: style is a skill, not a tax bracket. The group grew from five guys at a corner table to forty regulars taking over the back room. We had the "Vintage Hunters" who lived for thrift store hauls, the "MTO Crowd" who saved up all year for one custom suit, and the "Daily Drivers" just looking for a white tee that didn't shrink after two washes.
Then 2020 happened. No more bars, no more weddings, and suddenly, no reason to wear a suit. The community moved to a private Discord, debating the merits of high-end loungewear and how to keep a leather jacket from cracking while it sat in the closet.
Going Online
When the world opened back up in 2022, the landscape had shifted. Men were tired of "fast fashion" but overwhelmed by the "luxury" price tags. Mehul was getting endless DMs asking for the best boots under $300 or how to style a chore coat without looking like a 1940s mechanic.
So he built this site.
Styledean is the same community it's always been—opinionated, skeptical of logos, and fundamentally uninterested in "what's hot this week." The forums are the heart of the site. The reviews are for finding gear that actually lasts. And the newsletter is Mehul at midnight, writing about why the quality of Japanese denim actually matters.
What We Believe
- Cost per wear is the only metric. A $400 pair of boots you wear for ten years is cheaper than three pairs of $80 boots that fall apart in six months.
- Fit is 90% of the battle. A budget suit that fits perfectly beats an expensive one that doesn't every single time.
- Style is personal, not prescriptive. Wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself, whether that's a bespoke three-piece or a well-worn sweatshirt.
- Honesty over Hype. If a heritage brand starts cutting corners, we'll talk about it. We don't do "paid rankings."
About Mehul
Mehul is a creative developer who traded blueprints for button-downs. He lives with a growing collection of fountain pens and a wardrobe that is, according to his friends, "reaching a point of concern." He spends his weekends scouring flea markets and obsessing over the perfect 10oz oxford cloth.
